The unique and beautiful twin towers at Whiskey Beach in Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware are reflected in the high tide surf. While today, this view in the Lewes - Rehoboth Beach area is a bright and peaceful tourist scene, the twin towers served as part of a line of lookout posts guarding the entrance to the Delaware River during World War 2. When a German U-boat was spotted, the distance at sea was triangulated with the view from another distant tower. An attempt was then made to destroy the German submarine. Based on documents that the government declassified during the 1990's, some historians believe that America nearly lost the war on its own east coast. For a period of time during the war, German U-boats destroyed much of the American shipments to Europe.
