Description
This beautiful pony is one of many wild ponies located on Assateague Island in Maryland and Virginia. It is believed that the ponies are the descendants of horses that were aboard a Spanish Galleon. The ship sank in a storm, and the horses managed to escape and swim to safety.
Assateague Island is managed by three parks. Maryland State Parks oversees the northernmost portion. The National Park Service manages the Assateague Island National Seashore area of the island, also located in Maryland. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is in the Virginia portion of the island.
