Description
Romanticized in the movie, "Misty of Chincoteague", the beautiful wild ponies of Assateague Island enchant every visitor. Located on the Atlantic Ocean, Assateague Island is a national seashore park, with the northern half in Maryland and the southern half in Virginia.
On the Virginia side of the island, the Chincateague Island volunteer fire department culls the herd during a yearly roundup held in July. Some of the foals are sold at auction to support the fire department.
On the Maryland side, the horses are inoculated against disease, but natural selection is allowed. The horses are only helped if they get stuck in marsh. A park ranger told me that one pony broke her leg. Normally, when a horse breaks a leg, the horse is put down, but the rangers decided to let her be. Not only did she survive, but she has had two foals, and despite her lame leg, she manages to keep up with the herd.
