Description
Each year, just before the monsoon, thousands of young men and a few women take a holy pilgrimage from the town of Gangotri at the source of the Ganges. They will fill two pots with Ganges river water. They place the pots on each end of a wooden pole. Then they walk to their local village with the pole over one if their shoulders.
Trekking through the Himalayan mountains down onto the Gangetic plains, they continue walking to their local village. They may walk as far as Delhi or even beyond, travelling a distance of as much as 300 miles or more.
Local hotels and businesses along the way take delight in providing hospitality of free meals and a floor to sleep on.
On arrival at their village, the men and women take the water to the local temple. They pour the water over the temple deity, earning them great merit and an answer to their prayers.
In recent years, this pilgrimage has captured the imagination of Indians, with many thousands of people taking part in this spiritual quest.
