Description
A seagull ponders the meaning of a sign warning beach goers to stay off the sand dunes in Delaware State Park.
Sand dunes along the Atlantic coastline protect the shoreline from erosion during heavy storms such as hurricanes and Nor'easters. Walking on the dunes destroys the grasses growing there. With the loss of root structure, the sand dunes are destabilized.
Equally important, the dunes are full of wildlife that are dependent upon this fragile habitat. For example, plovers and other birds lay their eggs in the sand. The eggs are difficult to see, and they are easily destroyed by unsuspecting walkers.
In this fine art photograph, I like the humorous expression created by the seagull, who seems to be wondering if this edict applies to him.
