Description
A perennial attraction on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia, the wild ponies of Assateague Island are believed to be descendents of horses from a Spanish shipwreck. The horses escaped and swam ashore at Assateague. The ponies are actually horses. Their size is stunted because of the poor nutrition provided by the sea grass that they eat.
