Description
This beautiful old boat, located at the Indian River Inlet Lifesaving Station was used to rescue people and possessions from ships imperiled by a storm at sea. In the past, ships did not have navigation equipment, so they hugged the coastline. Sandbars and shoals near shore, as well as violent storms caused frequent shipwrecks. Often risking their own lives in dangerous seas, members of the Lifesaving Station saved over 400 people during its history. The lifesaving stations along the coast were the forerunner of today's Coast Guard. So risky was their job, that the surfmen working for the U.S. Life-Saving Service had as their motto, "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back."
