Description
This historic boathouse was built as part of the U.S. Lifesaving Station that was established in 1884 in Lewes, Delaware.
The life-saving station proved its value during the Great Blizzard of 1888. Braving heavy snows and gale-force winds, the station's crew joined the men of the Cape Henlopen and Indian River stations to perform an heroic rescue of scores of sailors when their sailing vessels crashed onto the Delaware Breakwater wall.
The lifesaving station was retired in 1915, when the U.S. Lifesaving Station Service was merged with the Revenue Cutter Service to form the modern-day U.S. Coast Guard. At that time, fewer sailing vessels and more steam ships reduced the number of ship wrecks.
