Description
Next time you are at the beach, take a few minutes to watch the teenagers and twenty-somethings skimboarding along the edge of the surf. It takes great skill.
Skimboarding has become a popular water sport in the last decade. One takes a small skim board and takes a running start at the final few inches of water as a wave finishes its onshore rush. The board is thrown onto the water and the skimboarder jumps onto the board. Almost like surfing in reverse, the boarder skims the water into the next wave as it curls and crashes. Although the ride lasts only for seconds, it requires great balancing skills.
In recent years, national skim boarding championships have become quite popular, with the best boarders performing amazing feats, flips, etc, as their board hits an oncoming wave. The young man in this fine art photograph is my best friend's son, Daniel.
