Description
The Assateague Lighthouse is located in the Chincateague Wildlife Refuge, on the southern end of Assateague Island in Virginia. The current lighthouse was built in 1867, and is still used as a navigation guide. The U.S. Coast Guard operates the facility. Located in the Chincateague Wildlife Refuge, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service owns the building. Once positioned at the southern tip of the island, the barrier island has shifted, and the lighthouse is now located five miles north of the tip.
A beautiful site, the Assateague light house is easily accessible by road. A short, easy forest trail takes you from a nearby parking lot to the structure. You are allowed to climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse for a small fee.
